Adoption levels are yet to be uniform but awareness about the need of industrial automation is at all time high among Indian industries. Influx and convergence of disruptive technologies such as Additive Manufacturing, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Robotics will take industrial automation to an all new level.
Sujata Tilak, President, ISA Pune Section & Managing Director, Ascent Intellimation in conversation with MART, stresses on the need of collaboration among IT, OT and IACS to streamline IIoT with opportunities galore for users.
(ISA Pune section is organsing a one day conference Industrial IoT The Automation Perspective on 11 November at Hotel Central Park, Pune.)
Q. What is the current status of industrial automation in Indian industries? What kind of adoption level do you notice?
Adoption of industrial automation is not uniform across various industry segments and this is expected. Some sectors, mainly large process industries like oil & gas, pharma, chemical are very mature in adoption. In discrete manufacturing, some segments like automotive, large FMCG plants have high maturity levels. MSME is a mixed bag. But awareness about need of automation is at an all-time high right now thanks to the entire buzz around Smart Manufacturing and IIoT.
Q. Industry 4.0 or Smart Manufacturing is widely envisaged as the future of manufacturing. What are the disruptive technologies that will help manufacturing in future?
The technologies that will help manufacturing go to next level are Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), 3-D printing or Additive Manufacturing, Advance Robotics. These technologies will use other disruptive technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Augmented Reality among others.
Q. How is your company Ascent Intellimation facilitating the growth of industrial automation with its solutions?
Ascent Intellimation is a thought leader in Industrial IoT. We have been propagating convergence of IT and industrial automation (OT) for many years and offering solutions in this area.
Our flagship platform, PlantConnect, is an edge to cloud IIoT platform. We offer several solutions based on PlantConnect platform in the areas of smart manufacturing, remote asset monitoring, environmental data monitoring among others.
Q. Please tell us about the conference ISA, Pune Section is organizing next month in Pune, its topics and opportunities it will offer to the participants.
Industrial Automation & Control Systems (IACS) plays a vital role in IIoT. In fact, IACS is the foundation on which IIoT systems are built.
The focus of the conference will be to elaborate on complete lifecycle of IIoT adoption for user industries. The conference will showcase how collaboration between IT, OT and IACS creates huge value for the industry. Many real life case studies will be presented. The conference will bring out various opportunities in IIoT, especially for IACS professionals, solution providers and System Integrators.
Q. What kind of role does ISA, Pune Section currently play in the training and education initiatives for professionals from the automation field?
ISA globally has a wide range of training and certification products. ISA website www.isa.org is a treasure trove of knowledge on industrial automation and related fields and all members get full access to it. ISA Pune Section regularly conducts conferences, free tech talks on various subjects related to industrial automation. We have ISA Student Sections in 6 engineering colleges in Pune. We conduct expert lectures, industrial visits, mentoring sessions, career counselling for these students.
Q. As the President of ISA, Pune Section and organizer of the conference, what is your message to the players in the domain of industrial automation?
I believe this is an exciting time for industrial automation. As everything from cutting edge areas to our everyday lives become more and more automated and connected, there is tremendous scope for making a difference. There is lot of interest in Automation Systems as these are the foundation of IoT. Many new avenues are opening up for automation vendors, solution providers and system integrators. But everybody can’t do everything. So find your niche and provide world class solutions and services in that niche to your customers.
