A perfect replica of Shelby Cobra was created by the Students of MIT College of Pune as their project. Shelby cobra 427 is a two-door roadster Anglo – American sports car with a brewed 7.0 litre V8 engine designed in both UK and United States since 1962.
MIT College of Transportation Design experience that the courses of study exclusively explore an inborn human need of human mobility. Beginning with the concept of transporting people and commodities using a variety of means, its emphasis moves on creating sustainable systems for Transportation Design. It is not only limited to Automobile Design and car design but to design systems which enhance mobility for humans and commodities.
Three transportation design students Vishnu Pratap Deepak Vijayan and Suyash Kalbhor of MIT College Pune, as a part of their final year project innovated to work on the project with the help of scraps. They found similar entities in the Maruti 800 and were a perfect replication to build the roadster Shelby Cobra 427. They have utilized the heart, the engine of the Maruti 800 to build the model. Initially the project was started by the faculty who approached the institute for the support.
The faculty thought that such a project would be a good learning experience for the students. The entire project took almost nine months to complete. A sum of INR 5 Lakh was allowed for the project from the college authorities, but that didn’t adequate, and when the strongbox ran dry, faculty members and students scratch in from their own pockets. In the , they collectively ended up spending around INR 3.5 lakh to INR 4 lakh on the entire project, apart from the sum initially assigned.
The faculty members Donshong Koren, Chatanya Kachare , Rakesh Sharma and Ajaya Patil and students Vishnu Pratap, Suyash kalbor, Deepak Vijayn have been working on the project since August 2015. The whole project was built in-house from chassis to suspension except lights and engine which has been utilized from the Maruti 800.No machine were been used for building the car. Hand Machinery tools were used to built the car. The project was divulged on the eight convocation ceremony of the college. All the members worked especially on the fibre glass body to look exactly like the original legend.
