Mrs. Hema Hatangaddy is the perfect epitome of entrepreneur who achieved success and bringing justice to the responsibilities that the role came with. She was only 32 when she was offered the post of CEO at Conzerv (Enercon systems)
Hema is an MBA graduate from IIM Kolkata and was working in an advertising firm prior to joining her husband’s family business. Ever since she had been offered the post of CEO, the company has gone through massive transformations.
Many a times she was brought on the crossroads where she was expected to make a prompt and appropriate decision that would shape the future of the company. In one such difficult time, when the company fell into the clutches of crisis, the organization received its equity funding from India’s first private VC firm, Indus Venture, set up by Mr. T Thomas.
Mr. Thomas made Mrs. Hema and her husband, Mr. Ashok’s experience with VC funding quiet different. Unlike pressure from investee’s capital, Mr. Thomas let the duo work with ease providing them with his knowledge that he gained through the vast years of his experience.
“We were able to build a strong market leader in digital metering and energy consulting that followed high ethical practices. We were never forced to take shortcuts to achieve our targets. In spite of all that we grew at 30% CAGR.”
She soon spun the new fabric that would turn the family run business into a well-organized and professionally managed R&D, marketing, branding and customer relationship. She embarked upon her journey with the assistance of her husband who was the head of Technology. Hema fought through tough situations and carried the responsibilities of new mother with grit and determination.
“I had to listen and learn benchmark against the best, learn from many sources including children, be aware of the inertia of success and create an empowering and transparent culture that was focused on growing giants. In 2009, Conzerv found its way into a case study conducted by Harvard Business School Advanced Management Programme under her leadership.
Being a women and running a company of thousands has never been easy. She has faced her fair share of difficulties and odds that block the ladder of success. We find a lot of women in the field of Finance, Marketing and HR but hardly observe any women in floor and women in sale of products. As she spoke about her steps to end the gender disparity and encourage the inclusion of women in her organisation she said “As woman CEO, I made sure the engineer wives of our employees who were at home looking after kids, were given special paths to come back to the work force and work alongside their spouses. I am really proud that all the wives I brought in to Conzerv, continue with Schneider or other international companies. They just needed that first big nudge and hand-holding like I got from Ashok and Mr Thomas. Then there’s no looking back”
Hema has been called a “Missionary in search of a cause” thanks to her evangelical zeal to succeed in challenging areas and her never say die approach. She is almost fierce in her determination to change the world for the better. Her vision and mission are futuristic. Her message for aspirants who want to make it big is to listen to their heart, keep their supporters close and shun out all the negatives from your life.
Under her supervision, Conzerv undertook many initiatives to educate children about energy conservation, long before CSR was made mandatory.
