An interactive webinar on “A STEP AHEAD FOR DECENTRALISED SOLAR” was organised by SESI in association with Kerala Renewable Energy Entrepreneurs & Promoters on 9 June 2020. In this webinar, SESI aimed to assess the driving factors and the challenges in adopting rooftop solar post COVID19. The webinar discussed the proposals under the electricity act amendment that have remarkable scope for higher penetration in domestic and commercial solar rooftops.

Prafulla Pathak, the Hon'ble President of SESI who was also one of the panelists of the webinar stated “the pandemic occurred suddenly and no one was prepared for it till February. Therefore, a lot of people have queries on how to deal with it. This webinar had many experts who helped people to solve their queries “. He further said that the government has also encouraged a lot of manufacturing sectors including the solar energy sector to produce PPE kits and that this will help in the rapid production of PPE kits, which can be exported if there is a requirement.

Jeevan Kumar Jethani, Director, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India spoke about self-sustainability and PM Narendra Modi's “ATMANIRBHAR BHARAT”. He also spoke about various economic activities and rooftop sectors

Aujendra Singh, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, spoke about rooftop solar, and it will drastically reduce the electricity bills which will result in reduced usage of electricity from the grid. In the coming years, the cost of heat from the network is also expected to rise, thereby increasing the cost savings. With a linear power warranty of 27 years, long-term cost savings can be expected through the avoidance of expensive electricity from the grid.

Nithyanandam Yuvaraj Dinesh Babu, Team Lead, Sustainable Partnership for Rooftop Solar Acceleration, Ernst, and Young spoke about the financial support extended by institutions for Rooftop Solar. He is piloting a solar program that is funded by the World Bank for the last three years. He discussed various financial aspects of rooftop cosmic energies and how to utilize them. Ritu Lal, Vice President and Head of Amplus Solar, discussed the impacts of COVID19 in different sectors and the uncertainties of the industrial and commercial sectors so that it can boost the solar and go green initiative. Amplus Solar is a leading company for recreational solar energy.

C M Varghese, Secretary, Kerala Renewable Energy Entrepreneurs & Promoters Association who was also the co-organizer of the webinar spoke about different initiatives undertaken by organizations in the state of Kerala. He requested officials at MNRE of bringing industry-friendly policies which can help the growth of Solar sector in the country.

Randeep Bora, Vice President-New Business &, Tendering, SunSource Energy, contributed with crucial tenets throughout the webinar. With over 13 years of experience in the renewable energy sector, Randeep currently leads the new Business and Tendering division of the company, which focuses on energy storage, floating solar, and all government/PSU projects. He also has been keenly working with policymakers to align the company's goals with upcoming policy initiatives.

Sivaramakrishnan, Lifetime Member, SESI, moderated the webinar, and all the participants were encouraged and vocal about the constructive discussions put up by the speakers. India is efficiently steering the rooftop component of the National Solar Mission. The rooftop vertical is set for a more significant revolution in the country.
