Today, we come with such a different journey of Dr. L. Jyothish Kumar, Founder & CEO of RAPITECH Solutions Inc and Founder President of Additive Manufacturing Society of India (AMSI). Set up in 2009, the objective of the AMSI society is to promote state-of-the-art Additive Manufacturing Technology (3D Printing) and expand collaborative relations with international organisations in all the aspects of additive manufacturing technology such as R&D, manufacturing, training & skill development to empower India’s advanced manufacturing technology.
For Dr. L. Jyothish Kumar, the drive to form RAPITECH Solutions Inc. came from a series of related Rapid Prototyping experiences and academics. His Rapid Prototyping journey started witha Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from the ‘National Institute of Engineering’ (NIE), Mysore and a Master’s degree in Rapid Product Development from De Montfort University, UK, under the close mentorship of Prof. David Ian Wimpenny. His areas of specialisation include Additive Manufacturing, Laser Metal Deposition Additive Manufacturing & Applications, Industrial Application of Rapid Prototyping & Manufacturing- Aerospace, Automotive, Biomedical, Industrial engineering etc. and Advanced Materials for Additive Manufacturing. He completed his Ph.D. research in ‘Aerospace applications of Additive Manufacturing Technologies and Advanced Metallic Materials’.
Prior to founding RAPITECH Solutions Inc., Dr. L. Jyothish Kumar has served in the mechanical engineering industry in Quality Assurance, Marketing, Sales and Product Development departments in India and abroad. He brings credible experience and knowledge from his project work at RPMG, UK in association with other high scales European Union €9M funded projects with 33 other partners across Europe including Delcam Plc (UK), Materialise (Belgium) and Ducati (Italy). He was instrumental in developing a new rapid prototyping process based on a combination of laser printing (electrophotography) and Infrared sintering polymers. His other achievements include Research & Development in the rapid manufacturing of Injection Moulding tool using Additive Manufacturing Technology and repairing of aerospace components using laser metal deposition process.
Dr. L. Jyothish Kumar is the member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal - Rapid Manufacturing (IJRapidM), USA and the International Journal - 3D printing and Additive Manufacturing, USA. He is also the author of books such as Advances in 3D Printing & Additive Manufacturing Technologies, Springer Publications and Casebook on Introduction to Additive Manufacturing Technologies. He is also the Managing Editor of The Additive Manufacturing Technology Magazine, the only magazine in India in 3D Printing & Additive Manufacturing Technologies and the Managing Editor of The Additive Manufacturing Technology Journal.
His research papers ‘Laser metal deposition repair applications for Ti-6Al-4V alloy’, ‘Laser metal deposition repair applications for Inconel 718 alloy, ‘Bonding strength of Inconel 718 alloy deposit and substrate processed by laser metal deposition’ and Repairing of ‘Ti-6Al-4V Axial Compressor Blade Using Laser Metal Deposition Technology’ have been highly praised in the International arena.
He specialises in Aerospace Applications of additive manufacturing and latest developments, advanced additive manufacturing processes and industrial applications – Aerospace, Defence, Space, oil and gas, automotive and industrial engineering, advanced materials and aerospace grade superalloys for additive manufacturing and process control and optimisation of additive manufacturing process for aerospace applications. His Prototype Development of 25 KN Engine through 3D Printing Technology for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bangalore has received appreciation from our Honourable Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi.
Dr. L. Jyothish Kumar’s is having in his credit major contributions to the advanced manufacturing technology in India, and some of them are promotion and creating awareness about ‘3D Printing & Additive Manufacturing Technology’ in industries, engineering colleges, universities and research and development organisations across India, Networking and developing collaborative relations with international organizations in the field of advanced manufacturing technology. He was instrumental in creating opportunities through training and skill development in the field of advanced manufacturing technology to empower India’s manufacturing strength and to achieve MAKE IN INDIA goal.

Dr. L. Jyothish Kumar has been actively involved with social service activities as well. He is the founder and president of ‘JeevanJyothi Rural Development Trust (JJRDT)’, Hunsur Village in Mysore District. JJRDT is a non-profit organisation which was started with the idea of bringing about a rural transformation and today it has evolved into all aspects of rural life-education, health, environment, agriculture, women empowerment and rural entrepreneurship. His projects in rural India carry an enormous amount of talented potential, unused creativity, and intellectual energy. “By empowering the rural community the nation as a whole can flourish and develop. At present the organisation focuses on the development of this rural human force through educating the children, providing the job oriented training to youth, empowering women and spreading the awareness about health and environment”, says Dr. Kumar. He has also been instrumental in introducing 3D Printing Technology in High Schools to Enhance Student Skills. “3D Printing technology will enhance the learning capability and skills of high school students by giving them hands-on experience on various biological models”, says Dr. Kumar. He has donated 3D Printed biological models to ‘Rahul High School at Mysore run by RSS Sanchalak Shri.Maha Venkataramji for underprivileged children.
His message to young entrepreneurs, “Acquire advanced skills available in the market in your domain. Don’t aim to be a job seeker, aim to be a job provider instead. Move ahead with a clear vision, patience, and hard work”. Himself from humble beginnings, Dr. Kumar says, “Everybody has potential, you just need to unlock it. Don’t run behind money but money should run behind you!”
Dr. Kumar’s future plan is to manufacture metal 3D printing machine in India and export them globally. He has already started to work towards it in association with experts in U.K. “The need of the hour is to make it available in all engineering colleges by 2020”, says Dr. Kumar. He is guiding a Ph.D. scholar and many other students also have free access to his research materials on the 3D printing technology models designed by him. Recently Dr. Kumar is also working towards the development of biomedical models of human organs like kidney, heart, liver, dental etc. through 3D printing technology. He has also been instrumental in setting up ‘Skill development center of Excellence’ to train technical students in order to make them industry ready and generate employment. His major achievement lies in the fact that unlike other industry professionals who charge hefty fees for such types of consultation, he believes in imparting knowledge to help in the country’s progress.
The current trend demands a high level of productivity and focused approach. However, with little time and equally large amount of workload, it does become difficult to manage time and get productive. It, therefore, becomes imperative that one needs to adopt stringently focused and positive attitude towards the goal. Since the inception of 3D printing in the early 1980s, mass production has been viewed as the technology’s Holy Grail.
