RORO Facility for Trucks by Konkan Railway to improve Logistics

Konkan Railway has added a new dimension to India’s freight system with its RORO (Roll-On-Roll-Off) freight facility for trucks. The facility is currently available from Kolad to Suratkal on the Bombay-Mangalore route of Konkan Railway.

Roll-On-Roll-Off has been a successful experiment where loaded trucks are carried over BRN wagons and transported on the route hassle free, eliminating chances of wear and tear, fatigue of the driver and also making the travel time remarkably shorter.

Trucks which needed almost 72 hours to cover the 900km distance between Kolad and Suratkal now travel the same distance in just 16 hours availing the facility.

In this arrangement trucks are loaded on BRN wagons through a ramp provided at the dead end of a loop on BRN wagons which have been suitably modified for through passage of trucks over them.

Before loading over BRN wagons, the trucks are weighed and passed under a height gauge (maximum 3.4 meters above road level) to ensure that they conform to the maximum moving dimensions for safe passage. The driver and helper of the truck can travel along their truck well inside their truck cabins.
