  • IoT enabled JEEVAN Lite is five times cheaper than existing ICU ventilators in the market.
  • Mobile App based features enable doctors to monitor incubated patients remotely.
  • Equipped with rechargeable batteries to ensure uninterrupted ventilation in case of a power cut.
  • Easy to handle and operate and portable from hospitals to homes.

Respiratory illnesses already cover the second largest number of deaths in India every year. The invasion of the COVID19 pandemic has only added up to this extent. Hyderabad based startup Aerobiosys Innovations which found its true calling in developing innovative products for respiratory illnesses hasn’t found its venture timelier, field more accurate, and efforts more satisfying than this time when India faces its toughest healthcare crisis in recorded history.

The healthcare technology startup which started its journey in 2019 to provide IoT based ventilator solutions has developed and manufactured an IoT enabled portable ventilator JEEVAN Lite.

Machine Maker spoke to Rajesh Thangavel, CEO of Aerobiosys Innovations to know more about its journey in the field and the new product. “Aerobiosys Innovations was established in November 2019, but we had already been working in ventilator space from 2018 as a part of the Biodesign Innovations program of Center for Healthcare Entrepreneurship of IIT Hyderabad where we saw the problems faced by ventilated patients in hospitals. We initially started working on our DUO-VENT product to address the problems faced by the ventilated patient due to differential infection in the lungs. We developed a PoC (Product of Conception) of DUO-VENT and won many national awards for our innovation in 2019”, said Thangvel.

JEEVAN Lite

Aerobiosys’s establishment and its research and development could not have come at a better time than this when the country is passing through a severe healthcare crisis like the whole world.

During March 2020 when we saw the increase in cases of COVID19 and the announcement of lockdown, we realized we can utilise our domain expertise during this crisis and start making a new product which will be a modified version of our first product DUO-VENT”

Aerobisys is working closely with healthcare experts on the development of this ventilator. “Dr. Ashima Sharma, Head of the Emergency Medical Dispatch department of Nizam’s Insitute of Medical Science Hyderabad is our clinical mentor and advisor. We took her feedback before we started working on this innovation”, Thangavel informed. Besides, Aerobiosys has taken feedback from doctors before launching the JEEVAN Lite. “We take doctors’ feedback regularly because they are the ones who will use our device ultimately”, he added.

JEEVAN Lite for COVID-19 patients is proving to be very efficient because JEEVAN Lite is an IoT enabled ventilator through which the caregivers or medical staff can monitor the graph and other parameters of the patients when they are on the ventilator. JEEVAN Lite is reducing the risk of cross-contamination by enabling social distancing and is helping the doctors to protect themselves as well as the patients.

Specifications of JEEVAN Lite

JEEVAN Lite can perform both the invasive and non-invasive ventilation across a comprehensive set of modes and settings. The ventilator can be used for both pediatric and adult patients. Since it is a portable ventilator, it can be used from Hospital to Home and vice versa.

The ventilator is easy to handle and has a monitor that can be operated using a mobile app. Being life-saving equipment, JEEVAN Lite ventilator comes equipped with rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries that can give uninterrupted ventilation for 5 hrs in case of a power cut.

Affordable Range

Aerobiosys has received many orders for ventilators, and are planning to work with their manufacturing partners to start mass production and hit the market as soon as possible. The current ICU-based ventilators in the market cost a minimum of Rs 5 lakh while JEEVAN Lite will cost only Rs.1 lakh.

Lockdown Impact

Though manufacturing of healthcare equipment is the utmost priority, Aerobiosys like most other manufacturing companies has faced trouble continuing its manufacturing. “Due to import issues, building a strong supply chain is a major challenge. Moreover, getting the manpower to work during lockdown is another issue faced by our team”, said Thangavel about the current situation and the problems faced.

Future Plans

Thangavel is hopeful that Aerobiosys will become a healthcare equipment manufacturer of world repute soon because of its focus on addressing the most pressing need of the hour. Elaborating his plans, he said, “Currently, we are trying to fulfill the demand of JEEVAN Lite but parallel we are trying to develop a full-fledged ventilator with international standards, which we plan to extend for international ICU ventilator market.”
